The Bit & Grain iPhone App Is Here for Contractors

Brandon Carroll

Founder, Bit & Grain

The Bit & Grain iPhone app went live on the App Store on October 5, 2026. It's free to download, and it signs into the same account you already use on the web. If you run the business from the job site, this one's for you.

Get it here: Bit & Grain on the App Store.

I built it because that's where the work happens. The 2020 JBKnowledge ConTech Report found that 92% of construction respondents use their smartphone every day at work. The phone is already in your pocket. The tools on it should be built for the job, not squeezed down from a desk.

What the app does on the job site

Start with the job. Every job carries its punch list, materials, time, files and a P&L. You see what the job is costing you while you're still standing in it, not three weeks later when the bank statement shows up.

The time clock keeps counting on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Start the timer, put the phone in your pocket, and the hours are right there the next time you glance at it. No app to open.

Then there's the rest of the day:

  • Appointments, and your route laid out on a map
  • A day of stops turned into mileage
  • Clients, with their jobs and history in one place
  • Equipment, with barcode scanning so you know what went where
  • Shop and site locations

Getting paid from the job site

This is the part that pays for itself. Write the estimate while you're looking at the work. Send it from the job site with a client portal link, so the client can read it and approve it on their own phone that evening. When the job's done, convert the estimate to an invoice. Record payments as they come in. Send a reminder when one doesn't.

Change orders work the same way. The client approves and signs on their end, and the change is on the record before you cut another board. That one conversation ("I never agreed to that") gets a lot shorter when there's a signature on it.

Mileage

Bit & Grain mileage on iPhone with the headline Track your miles with Start Trip

Tap Start Trip before you head out. Tap End Trip once you're parked. GPS records the route in the background, so there's nothing to touch on the road, and the app works out the deduction for you. Those miles are real money at tax time, and they're easy to lose when they live in a notebook on the dash.

The back office, in your pocket

Purchase orders, suppliers, warranties, subcontractors and safety data sheets are on the phone too. When the supply house asks for the PO number, or someone on site needs the SDS for the sealant, you've got it without calling the office. For a lot of small crews, you are the office.

None of this is a strange idea anymore. The AGC and Sage 2025 construction survey of more than 1,100 contractors found that 69% of firms use mobile software for daily field reports. Field work has already moved to the phone. What's been missing for a crew of five is one app that holds the whole job, instead of a stack of apps that don't share anything. That same JBKnowledge report found 27% of respondents had no apps on their phone that passed data to each other. That's a lot of typing the same thing twice.

What stays on the web, and why

Some work is desk work. Your website, marketing campaigns, social posting, team roles and billing stay on the web app at bitandgrain.app. Those are jobs you do sitting down, with a bigger screen and a few minutes to think. Cramming them onto a phone would make them worse, not better. It's the same account and the same data, so nothing has to be copied over. Do the field work on the phone and the desk work on the computer, and it all lines up because it's one business underneath. The full list of what Bit & Grain does is on the features page.

Grain AI on the phone

Grain AI on iPhone with the headline Ask Grain AI, type or hold to talk

Grain AI is built into the app. It's part of the product, not an add-on you pay extra for. Type a question, or hold to talk when your hands are full or your gloves are on. Ask what's due this week. Ask how many clients you have. You get a straight answer from your own numbers.

Receipts are where it earns its keep. Snap a photo of the receipt at the supply counter. Grain AI reads it and lands it on the job it belongs to. That cost is now in the job's P&L, and you didn't type a thing. The shoebox behind the seat can finally retire.

That's the whole point of the app, really. Every receipt, hour and mile lands on the job it belongs to, so when you want to know what you made on a job (not just what you billed), the answer is already there.

How to get it

Download on the App Store

  1. Download Bit & Grain from the App Store. It's free.
  2. Already a customer? Sign in with the same account you use on the web. Your jobs, clients, estimates and invoices are already there.
  3. New to Bit & Grain? Create an account. You get a 30-day trial with everything included, and no card to start.

After the trial, plans are on the pricing page. If you get stuck anywhere, the help center walks you through it. There's more on the app itself on the mobile app page.

What's next

An update is already with Apple. It gives every button in the app a spoken name for VoiceOver and Voice Control, so the app works for people who use their iPhone by screen reader or by voice. It goes out once Apple approves it.

Android is coming next. I'm not going to put a date on it until I can keep it. Until then, the web app at bitandgrain.app runs the whole product in any phone's browser, Android included. Keep an eye on the changelog to see what ships and when.

Put it on your phone

The work happens on the job site. Now the rest of the business can happen there too. Download the app, sign in, and run tomorrow's first job from your pocket.

New to Bit & Grain? Start your 30-day trial at bitandgrain.app. No card, nothing to set up first.
